Budget 2020 - Plastic Tax announcement

Manufacturers and importers will be charged £200 per tonne from April 2022 on packaging made of less than 30% recycled plastic.


Usage of Post-Consumer Recycled content is not without its challenges, as we reviewed in our blog about PCR in lidding film for higher temperatures.

Government's plastics policies could triple packaging emissions

The Government's ban on unnecessary single-use plastics could inadvertently triple the carbon emissions associated with packaging, according to a pre-Budget report from Green Alliance. "Fixing the system: why a circular economy for all materials is the only way to solve the plastic problem” argues for policies to prioritise an "overall need to use less material" and to improve the energy efficiency associated with material production and recycling.

Aldi lays down the packaging law

Last month, Aldi told suppliers that its packaging pledge is “non-negotiable”. In a letter from UK CEO Giles Hurley, suppliers have been reminded that all packaging will be 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable across own label by 2022 and across all products by 2025. And future buying decisions “will be based on our supply partners’ ability to lead and adapt in this area”.

The UN estimates that 800 million people worldwide suffer from hunger. The British Plastics Federation has looked at the role of plastic in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Call for packaging shake-up

A radical shake-up of how packaging is designed has been called for by a leading scientist. In Packaging Europe’s discussion of the pressing packaging issues of today, Prof. Dr. Andrea Büttner suggests that a pack should be designed for a specific product in a proactive way, taking into account distribution, presentation and storage in the consumer's home. She concludes “keeping food safe should remain a key factor.”

Veganism: Is your packaging animal-free?

Even beyond the throes of Veganuary, more people than ever are choosing to go vegan. Whether for animal cruelty concerns, environmental concerns or simply to try and be a little healthier, people across almost every demographic are choosing vegan options. Between 2010 and 2016, for example, PMMI reported a 25% increase in vegetarian and a staggering 257% increase in vegan global food and drink product launches. This has only continued to rise, with supermarket giant Tesco reporting in October that vegan food had been the fastest growing culinary trend of 2018.
