Optimising Resource Efficiency with Advanced Lidding Solutions

Press Release

KM Packaging, a leading global supplier of flexible packaging and lidding films, has harnessed its leading-edge Peel range of advanced lidding film solutions to develop new, resource efficient, reduced-plastic packaging

The KPeel range offers a high-performance, ‘seal and peel’ solution for renewable pulp and pressed board trays, to allow manufacturers to respond to widespread consumer demand for new sustainable packaging solutions. Combining a renewable resource tray with KPeel high performance lidding presents manufacturers with an economical first-step in plastic reduction.

Charles Smithson, Managing Director at KM Packaging, said: “Many food manufacturers and fresh produce packers are now keen to switch from plastic trays to alternative tray types. By combining our advanced KPeel range of lidding films with renewable resource trays, customers can achieve significant reductions in rigid plastic packaging without compromising on performance, product protection or retail presentation. KM Packaging’s compostable range of lidding films is also currently in trial and will present additional opportunities for sustainable packaging solutions.”

This was demonstrated by the company in a recent development project involving a convenience food manufacturer. KM Packaging helped the customer to achieve a reduction in overall plastic packaging weight of more than 80% by moving from a CPET tray design to a PET-lined pressed board tray top sealed with KPeel PLUS+ film. The change is reflective of current trends in the market as food manufacturers seek alternative packaging solutions, delivering significant reductions in plastic use without compromising on functionality.

The highly versatile KPeel lidding film range is suitable for a wide range of needs including ambient, chilled, frozen and dual ovenable applications. Its high-level transparency and clarity also create outstanding shelf appeal for fresh produce in pulp punnets, such as tomatoes and strawberries.

Mr. Smithson continued: “Sealing to PET lined pressed board trays, the KPeel range is an ideal solution for ready meal manufacturers looking to achieve a more resource efficient approach to packaging convenience foods. KPeel offers high sealing performance in both hot and cold conditions, with PLUS+ offering enhanced sealing capabilities for more challenging sealing conditions, for example, where there is contamination of the tray flange by oily foodstuffs.”

The KPeel range is suitable for printing, perforation and lamination to add functionality such as high barrier or improved strength. KPeel is available with or without anti-fog, in a range of thicknesses from 16-40 microns to meet the needs of a wide range of pack applications. Mono-PET solutions are also available, offering recyclable solutions, where local collections permit.

Lifting the Lid on Plastic: How the “greatest thing since sliced bread” became toast

Plastic was once hailed as the greatest thing since sliced bread. It was seen as the miracle product that transformed modern living more than any other invention.

Today, the headlines have a different focus. They now shout about plastics polluting our planet. In actual fact, plastics are not inherently bad and, as well as having a wide range of important uses, they play a vital role in solving many environmental problems.

And a step into the history of plastic also reveals it may have been seen as the greatest thing BEFORE sliced bread as it predates the 1928 baking invention by a number of years.
